Intro Handheld devices are currently being manufactured and developed for medical imaging. These devices allow for a quicker turn around on results. One major use for these is for detecting breast cancer.

Current Devices The main problem with current handheld devices is that they use flat faced probes. The new device being developed is able to fit to the shape of what it is imaging.

The Device The imaging device consists of a 785 nm, 500mW laser diode source and an intensified charge-coupled device camera detector.

The Device The handheld probe consists of 6 points of illumination and 165 points of collection of optical signals. The visual data was first obtained by the ICCD camera and then passed through a Matlab code to get a final 2-D contour image. The whole process results in a 2 second delay.

Study The first study used the device with a flat faced probe. The second study used the device with a curvature in the probe to fit the shape of the breast. The third study tested the ability to detect more than one mass in the breast.

Results The results of these studies showed that the device did indeed function as intended. This is important because the almost real time of the device allows for instant image access when used in hospitals.
