8 8 NBPTS Five Core Propositions 1.Teachers are committed to students and their learning. 2.Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. 3.Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. 4.Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. 5.Teachers are members of learning communities.

9 9 National Board Certification Applicants must have: At least three years’ experience as a preK-12 classroom teacher or school counselor in a public or private school A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution A valid teaching license or a license to practice as a school counselor

10 Is this a National Credential?  State licensing or credentialing systems set entry-level standards for novice teachers.  National Board Certification establishes advanced standards for experienced teachers.  Portability in most states.

13 13 The Process 1.A four-part portfolio of classroom teaching practice 2.A six-part assessment of content knowledge administered at a testing center National Board Certification can take one to three years to complete—and consists of two major components:

14 14 Four Portfolio Entries Large- and small-group videos of classroom practice Student work samples Documented collaboration Six Assessment Center Exercises Timed, open-response prompts Six Assessment Center Exercises Four Portfolio Entries The Process

15 15 Scoring  Ten weighted scores 4 portfolio entries 6 assessment center prompts  You may “bank” scores for two years and retake parts for a pro-rated fee.

16 16 Due Dates  2008-09 Cycle Application: Jan 1, 2008-Dec 31, 2008 Portfolio: March 31, 2009 Assessment: June 15, 2009  2009-10 Cycle (est.) Application: Jan 1, 2009-Dec 31, 2009 Portfolio: March 31, 2010 Assessment: June 15, 2010

17 17 Candidate Fees  Nonrefundable Application Processing Fee: $65 Due: When application is submitted.  Nonrefundable Initial Fee: $500 (applied to the total assessment fee) Due: No later than December 31, 2008*  Balance of Assessment Fee: $2,000 ($2500 total) Due: No later than January 31, 2009 - OR - Due: No later than March 15, 2009, if you participate in the Extended Payment Plan Extended Payment Plan
