Challenges: Towards Truly Scalable Ad Hoc Networks J.J. Garcia-Luna-Aceves, Hamid Sadjadpour, Zheng Wang, University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) MobiCom’07

INTRODUCTION Protocols used in ad hoc networks today is based on one-to-one communication to avoid multiple access interference (MAI) this approach does NOT scale! How to increase the order capacity? Two approaches: 1.Increasing the amount of information a transmitting node relays in each transmission Network Coding (NC) 2.Enabling a receiver to decode multiple concurrent transmissions. Multiple-packet Reception (MPR)
3
CONCLUSION Two results: 1.NC does NOT increase the order capacity of ad hoc networks for multi-pair unicast applications! 2.MPR does increase the order capacity by a factor of Θ(log n)! ☆ MPR is more attractive than NC! ☆ Combination of MPR and NC is the best approach to make ad hoc networks scale!
