Chapter 6 w Design Generation

Chapter Objectives w Design Types w Creative Processes Models w Creative Education Foundation Model w Modes of Thoughts w Types of Barriers to creative Thin inking. w Techniques for Generating Alternatives

Types of Designs w Configuration design. w Original design

Configuration Design This deals with the selection and arranging of components to improve performance and reduce size. Example: location of air planes engines, location of shifting mechanism of a two speed wheel chair.

Parametric Design w Deals with varying design parameter to achieve design objectives. w Boeing used this approach to design aircrafts.

Original Design w This refers to designs that are substantially different than existing designs. w The push button telephone is an example of a sudden major departure from rotary phone.

Characteristic of Creative Thinking w Creative ideas are new combinations of previously unrelated ideas. w Creative ideas are new original ideas solving problems in new and original ways. w A product of unconscious mind. w Elusive ideas.

Models of Creative Thinking Wallas Model (1926). w Preparation : The stage of clarifying and defining the problem. w Incubation: The mind is relaxed free the conscious. w Illumination: Recognition of the new idea (Eureka) w Verification: To check if the idea has merit.

Fabun Model (1968) w Desire: Shock and need to restore equilibrium. w Preparation: Clarifying and defining the problem. w Manipulation: manipulate ideas. w Incubation: Same as Wallas model. w Intimation: The feeling you get when you realize you are on the right track. w Illumination: Same as in wallas. w Verification: Same as Wallas.

Creative Education Foundation Model w Fact finding: Collect facts that may have bearing on the problem. w Problem finding: Developing alternative statements of the problem. w Idea finding: Where possible solution are first presented. w Solution finding: This is the evaluation phase.

Consolidated Model w Exploration : The active and concerted search of new ideas. w Incubation: The extended period of relaxation during which conscious effort for addressing the problem is made. w Intimation: The resumption of purposeful pursuit combined with the feeling of making progress. w Illumination: The breakthrough that produces an attractive new idea.

Creative Personalities w Optimistic w Confident w Enthusiastic w Endorses no perceived solution. w Adventures spirit w Willing to take risk. w Has a good sense of humor

Modes of Thinking w Left brain: Deductive, derivative, Specific, Logical, Hard and Linear. w Right brain: Inductive, Integrating, General, Imaginative, Fuzzy and Nonlinear.

Types of Barriers to Creative Thinking w Perceptual w Cultural w Environmental w Emotional w Intellectual

Types of Perceptual Barriers w Patterns w Boundaries w Illusions w Lens w Meaning.

Techniques for Generating Alternatives w Lateral thinking Do not pursue a design in detail Avoid critiquing any of the concepts. w Perseverance Try many times

Mental Push -Ups w Making lists. w Word games. w Solving puzzles. w Magic tricks.

Procedural Techniques w Brain storming. w Brain writing. w Story boarding. w Random simulation. w Analogies
