Information society - New challenges Changes effecting both school and church Which are they? Similar global tendencies? Secularisation Pluralisation Information flow Individualisation Family relations Need for human relations and social networks? Need for a home in a global world?

2002 Different tasks of school and church The need for a redefinition Especially on behalf of church - in relation to school – more or less secular and multireligious institution - in relation to society Why different tasks? How different? Why still so similar view on the ’educational’ task? Historical, academic, educational, structural reasons? (school rooted in church, didactics rooted in catechesis, higher education within the same institutions and so on)

The task of the church – both synagogue and temple The synagogue congregation = families living in a life-long relationship to church. Their spiritual home Religion is a life journey Children participate in celebrations during the rhythm of the year Belief in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost The temple congregation = all the baptized children in the local congregation Mainly for rites of passage, big celebrations, and cultural events Part of the normal upbringing for cultural and ethical reasons Belief in God as Creator and Jesus as an ethical ideal Christianity as heritage and national glue

2002 Task of the church Synagogue Continuous teaching –for the few Aims? Content? Means? Educational view? Setting? Context? Temple Occasional teaching – whole generations in phase programs and school/church cooperation Aims? Content? Means? Educational view ? Setting? Context?

2002 Church has new role as school changes Synagogue In past: School and church operated within the same paradigm: Christian worldview Church had a mainly supplementary role Today? Main responsibility together with the family for the individual religious upbringing for children living in an informed multireligious society. Temple In past: School made use of church to celebrate shifts in its own rhythm: end of winter and summer semester for all pupils. Today? Celebrations of the Church’s own festivals as an offer to see religion in function. Children take part on different conditions: some celebrate, some are informed, some observe or they opt out from this. Church as place for visit to be informed – part of the ordinary educational program for all pupils. Teacher sets the rules.
