2 The Course – Tech 198 The course has been offered since 1985 in the general education program and has been taken by thousands of students at San Jose State. From 1992-1999, this course was in the Earth and the Environment section of advanced general education. Effective Fall 2000, the course moved to Area V, Culture, Civilization & Global Understanding

4 Structure of Multimedia Unit 1 divided into six sections –What is Science?, What is Technology?, What is Scientific and Technological Literacy?, The Scientific Method, Attitudes Toward Technology, Technology Dependence and Technology Traps, and Impact of Technology on Society. Unit 2 divided into three sections –Technology in the Middle Ages, Islam Spain and the History of Technology, and Chinese Contributions to TechnologyTechnology in the Middle AgesIslam Spain and the History of TechnologyChinese Contributions to Technology

5 Structure of Multimedia Unit 3 divided into eight sections –The Industrial Revolution, Industrialization of Society in the 19 th Century, Workplace of 1900, Scientific Management, The Development of the Assembly Line, Consumerism in the West, Nature of Work Today, and How Does Technology Affect the Workplace? Unit 4 divided into five sections –Technology and Gender; Women at Work Before 1900; Women at work, 1900 to today; Attitudes of, and About, Women and Technology; and Gender-based Technologies

9 Assessment of the multimedia There are two parts of the assessment of this unit. –content assessment. The content of this unit has been evaluated by faculty from various departments at SJSU including faculty in industrial technology, history, and engineering. –The second part of the assessment is centered on the efficacy of this unit as a learning modality for students to accomplish the learning goals for its GE area at SJSU –GE Assessment completed Fall 2002 with data from 22 sections over 8 semesters

10 GE Assessment Learning Objective 1: Students shall be able to compare systematically the ideas, values, images, cultural artifacts, economic structures, technological developments, or attitudes of people from different societies. Out of approximately 513 students assessed, approximately 453 students met this GE Student Learning

11 GE Assessment Learning Objective 2: Students shall be able to identify the historic context of ideas and cultural practices in their dynamic relations to other historical contexts. Out of approximately 513 students assessed, approximately 426 students met this GE Student Learning

12 GE Assessment Learning Objective 3: Students shall be able to explain how a culture changes in response to internal and external pressures. Out of approximately 513 students assessed, approximately 436 students met this GE Student Learning
