1 PD Design: Distributed Expertise Focal unit is District, not individual teachers Goal is to elevate aggregate level of knowledge for the District Some teachers deeply knowledgeable about each core concept for a grade span Each teacher’s PD focused on supporting a key core concept
3
2 PD Design: Distributed Expertise Key core concepts identified from student achievement At District level, all key topics studied by several teachers/associates Teachers/associates are District resources for specific core concepts/topics
4
3 PD Design: Distributed Expertise PD topics (core concepts) are specific to grade spans: Elementary Middle school High school Needed: At least one teacher/associate resource per District for each grade span Teacher/associate assignment to PD topics made by Districts
5
4 The Summer Academy PD involves three dimensions: Mathematics content Leadership Data driven decision-making Year 1 PD Focus: interpreting and using PROM/SE data
6
5 The Summer Academy Associates: PD focus shifts to mathematics content Leadership a less prominent theme Data a major focus of Associate effort in Year 3 Non-Associate Teachers have one PD Focus: mathematics content
7
6 The Summer Academy: Elementary Topics Factions, decimals, and percents Common denominators Equivalent fractions Ordering fractions Operations with fractions Measurement Units; Area & perimeter of squares, rectangles, and triangles Volume & surface area
8
7 Geometry Points, lines, planes, and angles Perpendicularity & parallelism of lines and planes Measures of angles Whole number operations Estimation Patterns Number sentences The Summer Academy: Elementary Topics
9
8 Rational numbers and their properties Especially fractions and decimals Proportionality and ratios Geometry Perimeter, area, and volume Pythagorean theorem Congruence and similarity Linear expressions Equations – including slope and intercept Functions incorporating coordinate geometry Manipulating expressions The Summer Academy: Middle School Topics
10
9 Representations and analytic geometry Statistics and probability Functions Trigonometric Series and Sequences The Summer Academy: High School Topics

11 The Summer Academy Curriculum Lesson Lab modules Numbers and Numerations (grades K-3) Concepts of Measurement (grades K-3) Fractions Concepts (grades 3-5) Geometric Shapes and Solids (grades 3-5) Rational Numbers and Operations (grades 6-9) Solving Equations (grades 6-9) Ratio and Proportion (grades 6-9) Lesson Lab computer modules Either face-to-face with trained facilitator or Combination of face-to-face facilitator with online experience
13
12 The Summer Academy: 5-Day Structure Core concepts with Lesson Lab modules: 20 hours instruction over the week 10 hours mathematics content focus 10 hours focused on teaching the mathematics Deeper into the mathematics of Core concepts 15 hours Leadership Issues 5 hours
14
13 The Summer Academy: 3-Day Structure Deeper into the mathematics of Core concepts 15 hours Leadership Issues 5 hours Applications for the 5-day Academy accepted from those assigned to the 3-day Academy Limited number of applications can be accommodated
15
14 The Summer Academy: Facilitators Need ~ 60 facilitators to keep class sessions small Each District may choose one Associate to be trained as a Facilitator PROM/SE pays for Facilitator training Expenses and honorarium PROM/SE pays for Lesson Lab license fees for District
16
15 The Summer Academy: Facilitators District facilitator training: Online completion of assigned modules during the spring Self-paced About 20 hours; compensation provided Lesson Lab provides 5-Days of training Expenses and compensation provided Trained Facilitator becomes District resource
17
16 Mathematics Course Offerings: All Study the Same
18
17 Policy: Same-grade students study different content
