2 Pierre de Coubertin France has been with the Olympics since they were first revived. The modern Olympic Games were founded by Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin (1863-1937), a French aristocrat who believed that better physical education could have kept France from their military defeats in the late 1800’s. His movement gradually gained support, and the first modern Olympic games were held in 1896.

3 Important Winter Athletes Jean-Claude Killy: –Won 12 of 16 World Cup races –Swept the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, winning gold in all three alpine skiing events –Served on the organizing committee of the 1992 Albertville Winter Games

4 Important Winter Athletes (cont.) Marielle & Christine Goitschel: –Christine won gold in Olympic Slalom in 1964, while sister Marielle won silver. –2 days later, Marielle won gold in the giant slalom while Christine tied for silver.
