Preparing for Exams We have learned about using multiple sense now let’s look at using both sides of the brain

Visualize It If you are not someone who is good at deciphering the information in a non-graphic layout then this is the way for you.

Diagramming the information Compare/Contrast web chart For/Against Diagram Analysis diagram Time-line Cause/effect Given/Find

CC Web Chart works well with objective questions like T/F, fill-in-blank, or multiple choice Find several items to Compare: –List across top of chart Find several characteristics on which to compare items: –List Questions down the chart Use the reflection questions you have written from notes and text Don’t use yes/no, t/f, or checkmark items Include a recap question at the top that covers all the information in the chart

CC web chart Transmission Hologram Reflection Hologram How do they become visible when illuminated? What is used to illuminate them? What direction is the illumination? Same direction as reference beam. Laser or white light. Source behind or below emulsion surface. Same direction as reference beam. White light only. Bounces off surface. Question Item What are the ways that Holography can be seen?

Activity at the Synapse A nerve impulse can travel only so far along a neuron (nerve cell). Eventually it reaches the end of the neuron, usually positioned very close to another neuron or to a muscle cell or gland. Neurons, however, do not actually make direct contact with other neuron or with target tissues. Instead, a narrow gap, 10 to 20 nanometers across, separates the axon tip and the target neuron or tissue. This junction of an axon with another cell is called a synapse. Messages do not “jump” across synapses. Instead, they are carried across by chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. When a neuron impulse arrives at the end of the neuron, it causes neurotransmitters to release into the synapse. The neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse and bind to receptors in the membrane of the cell on the other side of the synapse, passing the signal to that cell.

What diagram(s) can you use to sort this information out Time-line Cause/effect

Time-line These help you portray and discuss a sequence of events leading up to some result Good for test with essay questions

Impulse of nerve cell From axon Neurotransmitters released Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse Neurotransmitters bind to cell on other side Signal is passed to other cell Time-line

Cause/Effect These help you show relationships that explain why something happened (not necessarily sequenced) The difference between time- line and cause/effect is: is the event is totally sequential?

Cause/Effect Impulse from axon arrives at the end of the neuron Neurotransmitters are released Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse about 10-20 nanometers Neurotransmitters bind to receptors passing the signal to cell

Using Study Groups Creating the group –only study with people who will help you prepare for the exam –pick people who are responsible and knowledgeable Study group success means to plan for the goal of the group Study group techniques –Compare notes and work together to create CC web charts and other diagrams

Getting info into your head Be selective in choosing the info you focus on –Write questions that are answered with MAIN POINTS Put info into your own words –create your own examples –Use elaboration Organize the info –use charts and diagrams Rehearse the key pieces of info –recite out loud the info Test yourself –Predict questions –Make a mock test –Keep track of the info you are having trouble with

Dealing with Test anxiety Be in the zone –Not overly intense –but not under intense either Be prepared Use relaxation techniques Use positive talk Seek help in preparing for a test Avoid caffeine right before the test
