Experimental Procedures Arrival at Desktop BASE Check that computer and DAQcard are still running. Sign in and start logbook entry (date and time). Note the condition computer and DAQcard found in. If computer is off, see below to reboot. Check power supply voltage. Currently the detectors used in this desktop setup run at 1500 volts. Adjust if necessary and note in logbook. If data run still in progress: Stop data run ( stop sign icon at upper left hand corner). Record Hit Counts from Counts page (see “Counts” tab in window) in white 3-ring binder. There are blank forms in the binder that are identical to the Hits Count page. Just date and fill in. Take 1.0 GB CompactFlash card from desk drawer. Plug it into the USB cable reader and check that it is blank. If NOT, drag its folder to the desktop and rename it (record this name in the logbook). The delete/clear the Flashcard. Pick up work gloves. Take voltmeter, jeweler’s screwdriver, to check DAQcard thresholds, as well as pen and pocket notebook to record findings down in mine. Rebooting Computer BASE To avoid port assignment conflicts, it is necessary to disconnect the power from the DAQcard (pull cord from socket in back of card) before restarting the computer. Once Windows has come up, you can reattach the power cord to the DAQcard. Mine Satellite Station Note condition of setup, record comments in pocket notebook. If DAQcard or datalogger NOT running, unplug power to each, disconnect detector cables, leave detectors in place, and return topside with the plastic case housing both card and logger and contact Dan Claes or Hans Berns, If data run still in progress, stop run (push small yellow “Record/Stop” button, on the front of logger (see inset at right). Pull power cords to data logger and DAQcard out from the power strip. Swap CompactFlash cards, placing the recorded data into the plastic case you carried the blank down in. Turn power supply high voltage all the way down. Unplug all detector HV cables. Disconnect signal cables from BNC spiggots on plastic datalogger/DAQcard box. Dismantle stand. New Satellite Location Reassemble stand, stack detectors in order as labeled. Hold stand steady as detector is stacked. Reconnect signal cables to side of datalogger/DAQcard box as labeled Connect HV cables to power supply. Power up HV slowly. Connect power to datatlogger and DAQcard. Power lights on each should be visible. Recheck threshold settings on all 4 channels (see page 3 for instructions). Adjust if necessary. Push small yellow “Record/Stop” button. Close up case. Final Checkout at Desktop BASE Copy any notes made down in the mine into the big logbook. Particularly transfer the times that runs were stopped and started below. Plug CompactFlash card into the USB reader. From “My Computer” open up this USB Mass Storage Device. It appears as a new drive after the CD & DVD icons. Drag its folder (/Hendersn/Data) to the desktop and rename it. Write this name in the logbook identifying the location from the mine where it was retrieved from. Then delete the folder (and all its files) from the Flashcard. Before removing FlashCard, click on the Eject Hardware icon in the right of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Highlight the Stop USB Mass Storage Device. You will be prompted when it is safe to remove the FlashCard. Return it to its plastic case and store in the desk drawer for next team to find. Recheck threshold settings on DAQcard (see instructions, next page). Adjust any if necessary. Start new run (see instructions below). Record time in logbook. Return work gloves, pen and pocket notebook. Starting New Run at Desktop BASE If CROPDAQ window still running: Simply click on arrow icon at upper left. Make sure the selection is still for 2-fold coincidences. Make sure all 4 channels are active (clicking on each should light up the green buttons). Also make sure that GPS Info button is on. The Delay and Width should be 144 and 216. Hit DONE. If data-taking does not begin within 30 seconds, exit this window and start from scratch (below) Re-starting New Run at Desktop BASE (from scratch!) Open CROP DAQ Card Interface ( icon on desktop). Under the Data Collection Settings tab Select “Long-term Data Taking Run >24 hours” Switch “Record Data” button ON OFF Leave the “TIMER” button ON OFF Change to Counts tab. Always leave the window on THIS page. Other tabs are monitoring & debugging windows that dramatically slow down data-taking. Click on arrow icon at upper left. Make sure the selection is still for 2-fold coincidences Click to light up each of the 4 channel buttons. Turn the GPS Info button on. Leave the Delay and Width at 144 and 216. Hit DONE. + ……. SanDisk 1.0 GB CompactFlash Resetting DAQcard If repeated efforts to begin a new run fail (the computer hangs after DONE) the DAQcard may be overwhelmed by the current muon rate and unable to accept commands from the computer. The RESET button near the power cable at the back of the card (picture at rught) will momentarily interrupt data flow and get the program started.

Setting DAQcard Thresholds NOTE: Threshold are in negative millivolt (mv) settings. Whether the voltmeter reads + or – depends on how you hold its probes (red or black to ground) as you take a reading. Current threshold settings are (but check the logbook for any updates/changes): Channel Desktop Base Station Satellite Mine Station 0 70 mV 100 mV 1 80 mV 80 mV 2 140 mV 150 mV 3 35 mV 70 mV Turn voltmeter on. Use the VOLTS setting. The ground probe can be placed at any of the metal rings designed for mounting the card with screws, or the outside metal of the BNC connectors. Locate the 4 blue square potentiometers (a small brass screw protrudes from each). Each of the thresholds for the 4 channels are checked by placing the point of the other voltmeter probe at designated “test points” just above the blue potentiometers. Use the points labeled TPVTH1 through TPVTH4 (Test Point Voltage for THreshold). Record the readings in the logbook. If thresholds have drifted from these values, reset them using the jewelers screw driver, while someone continues to hold the voltmeter probes in place (as shown below).
