FUND 310 Chartstrings Building a Restricted Gift Chartstring

Why So Many Chartstrings? How you solicit may impact the chartstring. What the donors states in writing may impact the chartstring. The more restrictions you and the donor agree to, the more chartstrings you will have! But too many restrictions means the transaction is no longer a gift. To change a restriction, purpose or agreement, each and every donor must give written authorization.

Gift funds have governing documents including such things as: who established the fund restrictions on spending restrictions on investing who can give to the fund contingency plans To receive a copy of gift fund documents, please contact: Development and Alumni Relations To establish new gift funds, please contact: Development and Alumni Relations

Grants vs. Gifts vs. Fund Raising The words “gift” and “grant” and “fund raising” are used interchangeably by donors, grantors and faculty/staff, however, the nature of the transaction drives UVM accounting procedures (not the words).

“I give to support A.P. Smith Research Fund in Asian Studies and I get intellectual property rights in return.” NOT A GIFT: IP rights makes this a grant; go to OSP. “My company gives to Asian Studies to support a lecture series and my company gets first rights to attend.” NOT A GIFT: Exclusive access makes this a contract; go to OSP. “I give to Asian Studies to support a scholarship if my daughter gets the scholarship.” NOT A GIFT: This is a tuition payment; go to SFS.
