Introducing Science – 30 minutes Give students a sheet of paper to write about favorite science memory, least favorite science memory, and what they want to learn about science this year. (10 minutes) Have students stand in circle and crumple sheet of paper up and throw it across the circle. Each student will pick up a ball and will share it with the class. The teacher will collect them at the end. (20 minutes)
2
Introduce solutions & mixtures Ask students to think about and share experiences with mixing things and make a list on chart paper for the class. (10 minutes) In small groups have students brainstorm other ideas and share examples with large group and then add those to the list. (10 minutes) Use the trade book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss to close the lesson and leave students with thoughts about liquids and solids mixing.
3
At the beginning of class, have students collect materials to create the Oobleck. Lead them through the activity and have them observe and explain what was happening. (full 30 mins) This would allow the teacher to have students record their thoughts and observations on a sheet of paper, encourage them to also write questions that they have. This night at Parent night, students will be able to share and create Oobleck with their parents.
4
Pass out science notebooks, have students transfer their observations and information to their notebook. (10 minutes) Have students discuss the activity and how it relates to solutions and mixtures. (20 minutes)
5
Have students brainstorm questions with the class, recording them on chart paper to display. If it doesn’t naturally arise introduce the idea of changing one of the elements (for ex: olive oil instead of water) (30 minutes)
