Riddle: Week 8; Day 1 How can you use six nines to equal exactly 100(you can use addition, division, decimals... just no other digits)

STUPID QUOTES "Caution: Cape does not enable user to fly." -Batman costume warning label

STUPID QUOTES "I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions-- but I don't always agree with them." -George Bush

STUPID QUOTES "Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life." -- Brook Shields

Deep Thoughts If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

Deep Thoughts Better not take a dog on the space shuttle, because if he sticks his head out when you're coming home his face might burn up.

Deep Thoughts Sometimes when I feel like killing someone, I do a little trick to calm myself down. I'll go over to the person's house and ring the doorbell. When the person comes to the door, I'm gone, but you know what I've left on the porch? A jack-o-lantern with a knife stuck in the side of its head with a note that says "You." After that I usually feel a lot better, and no harm done.

Stress & Coping

Phases of Stress Reaction 1) Alarm Phase—Body mobilizes to meet threat (energy, tense muscles, etc…)

Phases of Stress Reaction 2) Resistance Phase—Body resists unavoidable stressor over period of time EXAMPLE: Wall Street Traders learn to adapt to the daily stressors of making big financial decisions, and of winning and losing large sums of money.

Phases of Stress Reaction 3) Exhaustion Phase—persistent stress runs down the body—fatigue sets in EX: eventually at work, these stresses increase and fatigue starts to set in.

Stressors That Affect Physical Health 1) Noise—contributes to fatigue, irritability, & distractibility

2) Loss—death, divorce, etc… = lead to more illnesses Stressors That Affect Physical Health

3) Work Stress—Those who have less opportunity for initiative are more susceptible--Balance of work & life Stressors That Affect Physical Health

4) Poverty, Powerlessness, Racism Stressors That Affect Physical Health Several characters of different racial backgrounds collide in one incident. The different stereotypes society has created for those backgrounds affect their judgment, beliefs and actions. This in turn causes problems for each of them.

Optimism vs. Pessimism Pessimism = Depression –More likely to have destructive habits Optimist = More active problem solvers OptimistOptimist

Levels of Control Locus of Control —expectation of control over life events internal locus of control refers to the perception of positive or negative events as being a consequence of one's own actions and thereby under one's own personal control. external locus of control refers to the perception of positive or negative events as being unrelated to one's own behavior in certain situations and thereby beyond personal control

Primary Control Trying to change a situation to benefit you. "primary control" reflects more directly controlling behaviors “Western” Philosophy

Secondary Control Adapting desires to existing reality "secondary control" reflects behavior that, while not directly controlling, is directed toward promoting a sense of control, not by altering the environment, but by altering oneself (e.g., ones values, priorities, behavior) so as to bring oneself in line with the environment. “Eastern” Philosophy

Hostility & Stress Hostility likely to cause heart disease (those who mistrust other & provoke arguments)

Inhibition & Stress Suppression feelings can prolong anxiety, obsession w/ thoughts A new study finds that novelty-averse laboratory rats, after reaching maturity, died at markedly younger ages than did their more adventurous comrades. STRESSED OUT. The rat on the left exhibits fear and caution in a novel environment while its brother (right) displays boldness and curiosity in the same setting
