DENT 1260 IC Unit 5 Unit 5 Sterilization

1. 3 methods of HEAT Sterilization Autoclave- steam under pressure Chemclave- chemical heated under pressure Dry heat- heated air

Autoclave

1&2 time, temp pressure + - Autoclave 250F 20-30 min 15psi + liquids, time - corrosive, no closed container, wet (wick)

Flash cycle- Statim 273F 3-10 minutes

Chemclave- unsaturated chemical vapor

Chemclave 270F 20 min 25psi Formaldehyde and alcohols + time, dry - need ventilation, no liq, no cloth or cotton

Dry Heat

Dry heat 320F 60-120 min Static air Forced Air (rapid heat transfer) + no corrosion (dry), great for sharps - time, no liq, burn some cottons

3. Load and operate Keep packs, pouches and cassettes separate Place items on edge, not stacked on top of each other Keep packages facing the same direction

4. How does Saturated Stem under pressure kill microbes The heat, not the pressure kills the microbes Steam sterilizers heat water to generate steam in a closed chamber, producing a moist heat that rapidly kills microbes The pressure prevents air pockets that are not the correct temp from forming

5. General maintenance and cleaning Follow Manufacturer instructions Drain fluids and run cleaning solution through.

7. Reasons for sterilizer failure dirty instruments packaging Loading Timing Temperature Wrong method for material

8. Handle and store Do not handle unless pack is DRY and with clean hands only Dry slowly- do not use fan or blower Handle as little as possible Store in clean, dry closed area

9. Liquid sterilant Glutaraldehyde, 3-12 hrs, heat liable only and disposable is better Once removed- must rinse ( no longer sterile), dry and package. No monitoring Use life of glut??????????????

10. Ethylene oxide, bead and oil Ethylene oxide- gas, no heat, 4-10 hrs, 16 hr post sterilization aeration Glass bead- no monitor, not true sterilization, use on endo files for same patient but not between patients Hot oil- not sterilize, handpiece lube

11. Vocab Flash cycle- shorter, smaller Unsaturated chem vapor- chemclave Static air- not moving Forced air- fan, moving Sterilization failure- not sterile
