3 Course/Book Purpose  North Star is based on 5 principles: 1. S. stimulation (intellectual and emotional) to ensure retention and correct use of language. 2. Integrating grammar, vocab. and culture into reading to bridge the gap bet. your ideas/ feelings and your level of proficiency.

4 Course/Book Purpose  3. Active learning (both Ss and Ts).  4. Feedback:  Imp. for Ts and Ss  What and how Ss express ideas & feelings.  5. Friendly relationship among Ss and bet. Ss and Ts (Ss are supposed to express ideas & feelings )

5 Design of Units Approaching the Topic Preparing to Read Reading One Reading Two Reviewing Language Skills for Expression On your Own

6 I. Approaching the Topic (Predicting & Sharing Information)  a. Warm ups to introduce Ss to the context of the reading & get them personally connected to the topic.  b. Ss may react to an image, describe a personal experience, or give opinion in writing.

7 II.Preparing to Read (Background & Vocabulary for Comprehension)  Ss introduced to information (Background) and language (Vocabulary) to help them understand the text they will read.  Ss might read and react to a paragraph framing the topic, prioritize factors, take a general-knowledge quiz..  In the Vocabulary Section, Ss work with words and expressions to help them with comprehension.

8 III. Reading One a. Introducing the Topic b. Reading for main ideas c. Reading for details d. Reading Between the Lines (inference)

9 IV Reading Two  Ss introduced to ideas related to (and contrasting with) ideas in Reading One in viewpoint, tone genre...  Ss relate both texts, consider consequences, distinguish and express points of view. Why? To reach a deeper und. of the topic.

10 V. Reviewing Language a. Exploring Language  Ss explore, review and play with words. b. Working with Words  Focus: writing responses. Word forms, prefixes, suffixes, idiomatic expressions ….

11 VI. Skills for Expression  a. Grammar: Grammar points in both readings Practiced in writing.  b. Style: Ss practice rhetorical styles to help them express ideas on a higher level.

12 VII. On Your Own  a. Writing Topics: Ss use the content, language, grammar and style in exercises eliciting a level higher than that they started the unit with.  b. Field Work: Ss go outside of the classroom to gather data from personal interviews, lib`rary research and telephone or Internet research. Ss report and reflect on the data in written form.

13 Ancillaries  1. Writing Activity Book ( Ss use and expand vocab. and skills from the book) as they learn the process of prewriting, organizing, revising and editing.  2. C Ds recording the reading selections.
