The Life of Emmett Till Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till was born to the proud parents of Louis and Mamie Till on July 25, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. His father died in World War II.

At the tender age of 5, Emmett was stricken with polio, which left him with a slight stutter.

He attended James McCosh Elementary School, located on the south side of Chicago. This school has recently been renamed the Emmett Louis Till School in his honor.

Emmett loved the Chicago White Sox and to tell and listen to jokes. But most of all he enjoyed eating candy and making his belly roll.

TAKING A TRIP At the age of 14, Emmett went to Money, Mississippi with his cousin to visit his great uncle Mose Wright. Emmett’s mom gave him a signet ring that belonged to his father, on the day before he went to Mississippi. His mother also told Emmett to watch what he said and did during his visit in Mississippi because of the racism that existed. Emmett told her not to worry about him.

EMMETT’S BIG MISTAKE One night Emmett along with his cousins and friends sneaked out from a church meeting where his great uncle Mose was preaching, and went to the Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market. The friends and cousins dared Emmett to talk to the store owner’s wife, Carolyn Bryant who was a white woman. As Emmett was leaving the store, he allegedly turned whistled and at her.

THE KIDNAPPING AND TORTURE (the shed)
Rumors of the incident at Bryant’s store quickly spread throughout the town and finally reached Carolyn Bryant’s husband, Roy Bryant. Roy, along with his half brother, J.W. Milan, planned to get revenge on Emmett, by teaching him a lesson. On Sunday morning, August 27, 1955, around 2:30 a.m., Roy Bryant and J.W. went to the home of Mose Wright and awaked a sleeping Emmett and forced him from his great uncle’s home.

THE SEARCH FOR EMMETT Emmett’s family and friends were very worried and concerned about the missing Emmett. Some thought he had been beaten to death and taken out of town because of the incident at Bryant’s grocery store.

VERDICT: Bryant and Milan were both found not guilty and set free.

AFTER THE TRIAL Bryant and Milan made many comments after the trial, even alluding to getting away with murder Weeks later they confessed to a magazine how they tortured, murdered and dumped the body of Emmett Till in the Tallahatchie River.
