30-Aug-00 W.A. Zajc Intersection points Close-up of intersection point What is RHIC? l RHIC = Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider l Made of two intersecting rings u 2.4 miles around u Two counter-rotating beams u Intersect at six locations
11
30-Aug-00 W.A. Zajc l We have a theory of the strong interaction: It works well except when the interaction is strong! Why is RHIC? l To understand fundamental aspects of the strong interaction: u Where does the proton get its spin? u How does nuclear matter “melt”?

30-Aug-00 W.A. Zajc What is PHENIX? PHENIX u Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Ion eXperiment u The largest, most sophisticated heavy ion experiment ever built u A major piece of civil engineering u A showcase for Nevis Labs’ special talents in developing sophisticated electronics u A precision microscope, thermometer, etc. with which to probe the new states of matter that will be formed at RHIC.
