LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES THAT FACILITATE THE LEARNING PROCESS
2
D EFINITIONS: LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS ARE CONSTRUCTIVE IN NATURE, ENGAGING LEARNERS IN ‘SENSE-MAKING’ OR REASONING ABOUT EXTENSIVE RESOURCE SETS (HANNAFIN, LAND AND OLIVER,1999) THE DOMAIN WHERE LEARNING TAKES PLACE AND HOW IT IMPACTS UPON LEARNING. (TAMEZ AND SURLES,2004)
3
THIS IS A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
4
HOW MAY AN INDIVIDUAL MEDIATE DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS TO FACILITATE THEIR OWN LEARNING PROCESS?
5
THIS IS A DIFFERENT CLASS ROOM
6
IT HAS BEEN POSTULATED THAT INDIVIDUALS WHO EMPLOY METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL IN ACHIEVING THEIR LEARNING GOALS IN ANY TYPE OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
7
WHAT IS METACOGNITION? SIMPLY STATED: IT IS THINKING ABOUT THINKING.
8
METACOGNITION CONSISTS OF TWO BASIC PROCESSES OCCURRING SIMULTANEOUSLY: 1.MONITORING YOUR PROGRESS AS YOU LEARN AND MAKING CHANGES AND 2. ADAPTING YOUR STRATEGIES IF YOU PERCEIVE YOU ARE NOT DOING WELL.
9
RESEARCH QUESTION: HOW EFFECTIVE ARE METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES IN LEARNING THE BASICS OF CONTROLLING AN AIRCRAFT BY SOMEONE WHO IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH SUCH PROCESSES?
10
METACOGNITION MAY BE THOUGHT OF AS CONSISTING OF THE FOLLOWING: DEVELOPING A PLAN OF ACTION. MAINTAINING OR MONITORING THE PLAN WITH ACTION. EVALUATING PLAN
11
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: QUALITATIVE IN NATURE. SELF-REPORTING OF HOW AND WHY. IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FROM PIC. FOUR TRIALS. VIDEO OF TRIALS. POST EVALUATIONS
