1 ‘Who lives in a habitat like this?’ Kingfishers Autumn Term 1 2010 Mathematical development We will be developing our learning through the following units:, place value, ordering numbers to 1000, writing numbers in figures and words, addition and subtraction informal methods, Carroll diagrams, frequency charts and block graphs. All of these units will be applied through problem solving and reasoning activities. Communication, Language and Literacy Speaking and Listening : discussion groups, Philosophy for Children (P4C) and weekly thinking skills tasks.. Reading and writing: information texts, oral story telling, story mapping and persuasive leaflets during environmental week. ICT: We will be using and the internet as a research tool. We will also be using a data handling program to reinforce our understanding of scientific branching keys. MFL: Bonjour mes amis! The children will be introduced to numbers and colours alongside some simple conversational French. Creativity We will be developing creativity in all aspects of our curriculum. We will be looking at observational drawing and exploring mixing paint to gain a better understanding of shade and tone. Henri Rousseau’s ‘Tiger in a tropical storm’ will be our stimulus In DT we will be researching, designing and making our own product using recyclable materials. This will be happening during Environmental week. Knowledge and understanding of the world This term we will be studying ‘The environment’. We will be developing our use of the following scientific skills: Observational drawing Prediction Scientific explanation Scientific language Scientific keys Explaining findings Research skills In Environmental week we will be looking at the issue of littering and investigating how we could do more to recycle and reuse our litter effectively. We will also be looking at our personal tidiness and hopefully encourage the children to change their habits! Personal, Social and Emotional development Our SEAL topic for this term is ‘New beginnings’ We will be focusing on: Getting to know my classmates Contributing to a class charter Understanding my rights and responsibilities within school Coping with new situations Managing my feelings and learning calming down techniques Being part of the school community RE We will also be focusing on Christian values that come from the teachings of Jesus. We will be looking at being a good neighbour and the importance of forgiveness towards each other. Learning We will be developing our discussion skills with a focus on how we can become better learners. We will be focusing on which learning muscles we use in various learning situations. We will be continuing to develop our curiosity and questioning skills through philosophy. The children will be concentrating on improving their collaborative skills with each other and becoming more independent learners. Physical Development Our learning focus for this term will be consolidating and practising, performing and evaluating our work in gymnastics, focussing on posture and body control. The children will be starting their swimming lessons. The children will be developing their ball handling skills of throwing and receiving and understanding of the basic rules of tag rugby. The children have been invited to a tag rugby training session and festival at St Laurence.
