Implementing the Direct Snap Into the YDW 2009 Double Wing Symposium Jack Gregory © 2009
2
Double Wing Is My Base I have run the Double Wing for twelve years. I have used some form of direct snap with the Double Wing for six seasons. I use angle blocking (down and kick out) has my base blocking scheme I use direct snap concepts to improve my power play and give my team the ability to adapt to the perimeter triangle.

Appear Multiple Use simple single wing conceptsUse simple single wing concepts Single Straight SeriesSingle Straight Series Alter your base formation into a direct snap formation that compliments your base plays and stays true to your blocking scheme, play scheme, and base formationAlter your base formation into a direct snap formation that compliments your base plays and stays true to your blocking scheme, play scheme, and base formation Keep the formation changes simple and make sure they will blend into your overall offensive philosophy.Keep the formation changes simple and make sure they will blend into your overall offensive philosophy. Direct snap to create lines of force for the power playDirect snap to create lines of force for the power play Create pre-flow alignment that forces a reaction from the defense.
4
Pros 1)Alleviates the center/QB exchange issue 2)Gives your interior linemen more space to operate in for pulling, folding, zone blocking, and pass blocking. 3)It increase the amount of time the backfield has to carry out fakes and make pass reads. 4)It speeds up the play by.2 to.5 seconds. I have timed it! 5)It puts the ball into your best players hands. 6)It gives you the ability to adapt to the loss of a QB (injury/grades/travel/sickness) 7)It gives your opponents a different look while running your base offense. The appearance of being multiple. 8)It gives you more options to adapt the play with tags and adjustments. 9)Gives you a distinct line of force that defenses will over react to opening your counter game.
5
Cons 1)The snap must be consistent or the play will not be consistent. Inconsistent snaps can cause turnovers. 2)Can be an issue in poor weather (rain, snow, ice, hard wind). 3)The back receiving the snap must have good hands and secure the ball quickly often while on the move. 4)Direct snaps allow defensive ends and other perimeter defenders to attack the landing point where the ball will be. You have to use misdirection (split flow) to keep the perimeter defenders alert to defending the edge.
6
Run Power Stupid! 1)Don’t forget why you are doing what you do. 2)Adjust and adapt to make your power better. 3)Keep running power even when it is not working because it is.

Play Calling Formation Tag Formation Motion Back/Hole Blocking Scheme Over Tight Rip 26 Seal Keep Additional Tags Formation will often never be called. Simply the tag (if any), motion (if any) along with the hole, blocking scheme, and wall side. We have a WALL SIDE and PULLING SIDE of our line. WALL side will always line up on the play side (unless it is wedge then it does not matter).

We Can Run One Base Play But Do A lot More! Keys: 1.Formations that put your players into positions to take advantage of defensive weaknesses. 2.Tags that change only two or three assignments at most. 3.The ability to call them from the sideline or add them to the play. 4.Keep them guessing at all times. 5.Force them to defend the base play. 6.Key on their adjustments to formation. (Perimeter Triangle) 7.One or two formations and a few formation tags is all you need to appear multiple.
