3
paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 3 3 Some additional comments received re: Response to BL review. Aim to include & get response to PD/Tech Board next week. To reviewers 25 th ? Design

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 4 4 Efforts to establish a trustworthy model of the Beamline (i) Design … Downstream lattice:: List of possible causes Pre-CM17 case Current

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 5 5 Efforts to establish a trustworthy model of the Beamline (ii) Design Strategy: - to aid cleaner interpretation Needs focussed code/processing time. Have ~2.5weeks to milestone. Mainly KW/fraction of KT. Do need others actively involved.
6
paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 6 6 Albeit code comparison ongoing – - techniques being exercised to produce (6,200) in G4BL - being undertaken by Dazhang Huang (IIT) & Tom (MuonsInc) Optimisation Design

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 7 7 Pre-commissioning: Magnet tests Commissioning important measurements: polarities of magnets current to field relationship magnetic alignment: need simple tools to check field centres; Standardisation procedure? ideal measurements: field quality/uniformity effective length - Decay solenoid? - Extensive discussion on dipole/quad magnet tests/method - Outline above needs-> new doc? (KT) - Need to identify individual now. to help drive this through (jig design/kit &/or measurements) requires 3xjigs & kit for July measurements. - Need to confirm workshop now to produce eqpt. FOR July. (possibly ISIS w/shop / but…?)

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 8 8 Online prePhase1 beam commissioning planning: Commissioning - At time of writing we (BL group) have made ~ 2 separate, incomplete run plans. - + initial discussions with RIKEN people re: commissioning RIKEN/ISIS beamline -Forward planning has been insufficient attention. -Intention to begin deeper focussed discussions this week (Friday 11 th May 10:30 BST): all welcome -Hope to have at least outline, complete plans for discussion at CM18 by MICE.

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 9 9 Basic beam monitors: Commissioning - Already established need 2x detectors - Applications: Upstream: Beam present / flux Beam size / centre (esp. vertically) BBA still being discussed Downstream: Beam present / flux Beam size / centre (mainly for gross errors) BBA still being discussed - Specifications: Upstream: Size ~20x20cm suitable : Resolution ~ 6mm ok for flux/ctr/size (1mm if BBA). Build with 1mm’s : Rates: order of magnitude estimate for nominal case ~10^9Hz inst : Fields: given Downstream: Size ~ 44.8x44.8cm suitable : Resolution ~1.4cm ok for flux/ctr/size (1mm if BBA). Build with 1mm’s : Rates: order of magnitude estimate for nominal case. ~10^8Hz inst : Fields: given Final readout solutions for both monitors in development.

(-> a later detector if rqd?) Size: 44.8x44.8cm good (mostly covers Q35 aps) Fields: max 190Gauss vertically (if Decay Sol B2) Rate estimates: - see next slides` Supplementary re: detectors

paul drumm, mutac jan 2003 13 Commissioning / fault finding locations Basic Beamline monitors Specification / applications Downstream Main home Rates: Estimated based on G4BL TOF0 CM14-6-200 Rate (3.22MHz): - which usesnormal target insertion, production & normalisation assumptions……….. Then using Turtle pion+muon local fluxes & scaling 3.22MHz appropriately. Note the figure is for beam over all area. If a second (lower) figure given – this is implies the rate for the smaller 44.8x44.8cm is as given & is lower. After C2H4 (protons removed): pi+mu ~ 121MHz b4Q4 : pi+mu ~ 116MHz (~115MHz 44.8x44.8cm) b4Q5 : pi+mu ~ 5.6MHz b4Q6: pi+mu ~ 3.8MHz b4t0: pi+mu ~ 3.22MHz b4q7: pi+mu ~ 3.18MHz (~3.16MHz 44.8x44.8cm) b4q8: pi+mu ~ 2.0MHz b4q9: pi+mu ~ 1.78MHz @MICE: pi+mu ~ 1.69 MHz Before C2H4 (protons included): pi+mu ~ 1212MHz Supplementary re: detectors: d/str rate ests
