Status of EMC background data Tim West University of Manchester

Simulated data Simulated data is available for Turtle generated rays in both the HER and LER. Files are arranged according to which zone of the HER or LER the scatter occurs in and whether it is a Bremsstrahlung or Coulomb process. Have been using PepBkgMCApp to look at the data and produce root files for further study. Have access to a range of useful quantities in the resulting ntuples contained in the root files (including): –General quantities: Position of scattering events along beam-pipe. Location of first hits of electrons/positrons with beampipe/surrounding material. –EMC specific quantities: Digi locations (crystals with over 2MeV of energy deposited). Default digi list (must be connected to a 10MeV seed crystal). EMC clusters and bumps (generally the same thing). Energies for digis, clusters and bumps.

Example plots for LER Coulomb Data is for zone 5 (62m-2196m

Example plots for HER Brem Plots show zone 1-4 events. Pep scatter location (gtrtz[0]) is not normalized between zones. Simulated digi energies appear to extend to below the 2MeV limit – something I need to check up on.

Real Data Real data available for single beam and no beam runs. Obviously do not have scatter locations or pep hits. Do have access to digi lists, clusters, bumps etc. Possible to compare real data to simulated data to real data for single beams to try and obtain information on which scattering events/regions cause the most background. Can also compare to find the material around the detector causes the most background.
