Radar and Sensors AIAA 1 Robert Adams Angie Brooks

Defined RADAR Radio Detection and Ranging A system that uses radio waves to detect and determine the direction, distance, and/or speed of objects and map them SENSOR A device that responds to a physical stimulus and transmits a resulting impulse (as for measurement or operating a control)

Radar Altimeter Gives the absolute height of the Plane. Cost ($) Size (in) Weight (lbs) TRA 3000 3,270 1x5x7.6 1.6 TRA 3500 5,920 3x3x6.9 3.25 King KRA 5,875 3x5x11 6.3 (http://www.freeflightsystems.com/prod_radalts.html)

Weather Radar Displays current weather. Cost ($) Size (in)Weight (lbs) RDR-1400C 30k 6x6x11 12 ART 2100 26k 6x4x10 10 (https://www3.bendixking.com) Antenna sizes vary from 10-18 inches depending on need.

Other Types of Radar AN/APT – Airborne Radar Transmitters AN/APW – Airborne Flight Control Radars AN/APX – Airborne Identification Radars AN/APY – Airborne Surveillance Radars AN/ALR-67(V)2 Radar Warning Receiver APQ-181 All-weather Weapons Delivery Radar

Sensors Position Pressure Force Radar (http://www.honeywell.com/sites/aero/Aircraft_Sensors.htm) Some Examples from Honeywell…

Position Measures position of Flaps, engine nozzle, landing gear, and pilot input controls. This device is a Honeywell RVDT weighing in at 1/3 pound.

Pressure Measures gage, absolute and differential pressures. Used in bleed air, fuel, engine oil and hydraulic fluid pressures applications. Weighs about 5 oz without addition of fitting.

Force Used for pilot input measurements, servo- loop feedback, overload protection and payload measurement. Weighs 1.75 lbs Torque sensor weighs about 2 lbs.

Radar Sensor Informs the pilot that the enemy has radar pointed at them. An example is the ALR-69. It is a basic fuzz buster for the military. Has a 3 by 9 in Cathode Ray Tube. Cost less then $15000 per unit and weighs approximately 42 lbs.
