Unit 11 Personal Relationship

Learning Objectives  To talk about the personality that influences your life.  To discuss the ways to build up your personal relationships

Warming up Question  Have you ever had your fortune told by the fortune teller?  Here are a group of words describing personal characteristics. Choose the six personal characteristics out of those listed which best describe the kind of person you think you are. Discuss with you group members and ask for suggestions. Then choose the six personal characteristics you would most like to see in your ideal marriage partner. Compare your choices with your group members and discuss the differences.

Chain questions and answers on a certain theme  Requirement: student A ask student B a question. B answers the question and then asks C another question. Student C gives an answer and then asks D a different question. All the questions should focus on the same theme --- personal relationships.

Play a game  Rules: There are ten words as follows. Student A describes the words in English or with your gestures(only cannot use Chinese), and try to make student B understand it and to guess it. The group which can guess more words within the same time wins the game.

The misery of Shyness  Do you think shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for many people? Yes, those shy people are quite anxious and self-conscious; they care too much about what they are like and how they act. Indeed, such feelings have an influence on shy people and their life. Because of their low self- esteem, they are more likely to be passive and easily affected by others, and they are sensitive to criticism, for it only confirms their feelings of inferiority to others.

Continued  But shyness can be eliminated or at least reduced with determined and patient efforts in building self- confidence. As shyness is closely associated with lack of self-esteem, it is of great importance for shy people to accept their weakness as well as strong points. They should not label themselves as inferior just because of their difficulty in some fields.

Role play:  Suppose you are a psychologist. A girl comes to ask you for help because she is in trouble simply because she is too shy. What suggestions will you give her to overcome her shyness?
