11. Carbon dioxide in the air has increased a lot. Carbon dioxide comes from burning oil, coal and wood. This has formed a “blanket” around the Earth. The heat from the sun cannot escape and so the temperature is rising – the “greenhouse effect”. This means that the level of the sea is rising and the climate is changing. Greenhouse is not a green house!

12. The world has over 9 million square km of forests. But they are disappearing fast. Every year over 100,000 sq. km of forest is so badly damaged that it is very hard for it to recover. In fact, the rate of destruction is increasing, so in only just over 30 years there will be very little forest left in most areas. This includes rainforests in Madagascar, Ecuador, Amazonia, Cameroon, the Himalayas and the Philippines. Forests are very important for us. We need them! The trees and other plants in the forest help to make the air that we breath. They also help to control the weather. They give us wood, rubber, fruits and many of our medicines. Let’s protect forests!
