Purpose Isolation of DNA from fruit using common household items and visualizing

Materials 1 tomato, peach, kiwi, strawberry…. 3 g NaCl salt 10 mL clear shampoo Water 1 liter Zip Lock bag 20 mL cold ethanol Protease solution Coffee filter, knife, beaker, water bath, ice

Step 1: Cut up fruit

Step 2- Mix fruit, water, shampoo, and salt

Step 3- Heat sample for 10 min at 60 o C

Step 4: Place zip lock bag on ice till cool

Step 5- Filter solution and collect 20 mL of extract

Step 6- Add protease solution and cold ethanol

Discussion Questions What was the purpose of the shampoo? What was the purpose of the salt? Why was it necessary to mash the fruit? Why do you heat and cool the mixture? What happens when the cold ethanol is added? Would it make a difference if it were warm ethanol that was added?
