2. Purpose Isolation of DNA from fruit using common household items and visualizing

3. Materials 1 tomato, peach, kiwi, strawberry…. 3 g NaCl salt 10 mL clear shampoo Water 1 liter Zip Lock bag 20 mL cold ethanol Protease solution Coffee filter, knife, beaker, water bath, ice

4. Step 1: Cut up fruit

5. Step 2- Mix fruit, water, shampoo, and salt

6. Step 3- Heat sample for 10 min at 60 o C

7. Step 4: Place zip lock bag on ice till cool

8. Step 5- Filter solution and collect 20 mL of extract

9. Step 6- Add protease solution and cold ethanol

10. Fruit DNA Isolated

11. Discussion Questions What was the purpose of the shampoo? What was the purpose of the salt? Why was it necessary to mash the fruit? Why do you heat and cool the mixture? What happens when the cold ethanol is added? Would it make a difference if it were warm ethanol that was added?
