3 Why was Charles Habsburg's election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1519 the defining moment in foreign relations? – Lee p.115 Foreign policy in Europe had traditionally been based on the Italian Wars (1494), therefore Northern FP was insignificant in comparison. Henry – personal issue – King of France in title 1519 Charles I elected as Holy Roman Emperor over Francis I – Hapsburg Valois rivalry intensified England 2 possible allies – but English cloth trade depended on markets of Burgundy Henry VIII – war like, Renaissance Prince, desired glory Little support in England for war – constant high tax demands, disruption to trade and domestic economy.

4 Group Challenge Using the information on pages 121-123 of Lee you must prepare a detailed timeline showing England's relations with the Holy Roman Empire and England's response to the Habsburg-Valois wars. You must also prepare a short presentation based on these questions 1) Why do you think England initially support the Habsburg's and declared war on France in 1522? 2) Why was the 1522-25 war with France a failure? 3) Why did England reverse her foreign policy and support France, 1525-29? 4) Why was English Foreign Policy between 1525-29 a failure?
