How Western got their nickname… The Bronco’s nickname dates back to 1939 and was submitted by a WMU alumnus John Gill. Before the name Broncos came along, the nickname Hill Toppers was used reflecting the college’s original Prospect Hill campus. The name Hill Topper was changed due to other institutions having a similar name.
