2 CA Causes2 SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS AS A CAUSE OF PHYSICAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN AND PARTNERS * Examples of Serious Mental Illness Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder * Percent of with serious mental illness who physically abuse 2% to max of 10% depending on the study * Similar to studies of other kinds of violence Homicides: 4.3% by the mentally ill (Dept of Justice Study) Public misled by sensational cases that make headlines * Studies of mental hospital patients A much larger percent are violent: 20% violent Selection effect - Mental hospital patients Mentally ill and violent more likely to be hospitalized * Confounded with alcohol and drug abuse * The meaning of “confounded” and “controlled” * “Psychological problems” short of “serious mental illness” play a larger role, e.g. “negative attribution” “depression” because they are more prevalent in the population
