4. HAIR CARE Brushing and dressing one’s hair is part of daily care.

5. Function of hair care oIt keeps the hair in good condition. o Makes the person feel better. o Encourage clients to comb their own hair. o Enhances self-esteem.

6. Daily Hair Care Purposes Assess the client’s hair. Stimulates scalp circulation. Clean the hair and scalp.

7. Assessment  Client’s physical ability to care for hair.  Client’s hair care practices.  Client’s preferred hairstyle.  Type of hair care products.

8. Planning Equipment. face flannel towels shampoo/hair conditioner bowl of warm water for pouring container to collect used water jug of water waterproof sheeting to protect bed plastic apron brush/comb surface for equipment

9. Procedure (implementation) Procedure Explain procedure to the client Gather all the equipment at the bedside Put on apron, wash hands. Ensure client’s privacy Rational Gain consent and co-operation Ease of access, ready for use Reduce risk of cross-infection

10. Action Adjust the height of the bed, remove bed head. Place waterproof sheeting under client’s shoulders, neck and head Rational Ease of procedure Protection of pillows, bedclothes and client’s clothing

Place bowl under the client’s head Inspect the client’s hair and scalp, removing any hair accessories Brush and/or comb client’s hair through To catch water as it is poured over the client’s head To assess the necessity for special shampoos/treatments To remove tangles and allow shampoo to permeate through the hair

12. Talk client through each step of the procedure. Assess the temperature of the water with the client. Client co-operation, client safety.

13. Ask client to hold face flannel over the eyes as water is poured over the client’s head. Prevent water and shampoo irritating the eyes. To maintain comfort

14. Massage scalp by applying fingertip pressure all over the head. Rinse thoroughly and repeat. Towel the hair dry Assist the client into a comfortable position and comb hair To ensure thorough distribution of shampoo. To prevent cooling Client comfort. Removal of tangles
