GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop Program outline Morning session –Introductions Who/what do we represent and who/what is missing? Special needs / nature of GIS The enabling developments of Grid computing –Grid middleware developments –Some demonstrators and ongoing work –Grid enabling data Afternoon session –Where do we go from here?

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop Who are we? Geographic/Geospatial Information System aware –GIS user? –GIS user for academic research? –Internet GIS software user? –Internet GIS software developer? –User or developer of Grid enabled GIS? Grid aware –Grid middleware user? –Grid middleware developer?

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop We are: Mostly academic researchers in the Geospatial Information (GI) community –Mostly from university geography departments Data providers to GI community Grid computing specialists Specialists in collaboration?

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop Are we representative? The GI community comprises many non- academic organisations –Government, business, public –Regional/National/International bodies Geospatial Grid research is ongoing –Standards for data and data exchange are emerging –The environmental eScience part of the GI community are up and running –Grids are only just becoming popular in social science GIS realm of academic research in the UK

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop Can we set an agenda? We have to realise that there is already a sizeable GI and Grid community –We need to engage –Are we engaging? –How do we engage? They key to our future success and involvement is collaboration

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop Some questions to address What organisations are developing Grid enabled GIS? What needs to happen to Grid enable geospatial data? What is happening to Grid enable geospatial data? What data is Grid enabled and how can it be accessed?

GIS and Grid Computing Agenda Setting Workshop More questions to address What needs to happen to Grid enable a geospatial data processing toolkit? What is special and what are the difficulties with Grid enabling social science GIS applications? Is there an appetite for shared development? –How do we proceed?
