2 Why need GE? to augment and round out the specialised training students receive in their majors by enabling them to achieve a breadth of knowledge through exposure to other disciplines. GE aims to equip students with a broad range of skills and knowledge necessary for facing the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

3 CityU Ideal Graduate (Strategic Plan 2003-2008) qualified, competent professionals with high moral and ethical standards proficient communicators  language proficiency, computer literacy and interpersonal skills confident to  enter a more international and culturally diverse workplace  take up broad responsibilities in their community able to think critically and to solve problems independently able and willing to continue to learn able to appreciate the arts, culture and history

5 Intended Learning Outcomes On completing a General Education course you will be able to: Apply intellectual and practical skills Relate knowledge of diverse people and cultures Apply a broader knowledge of the natural and physical world Generate the capacity for assuming individual and social responsibilities Generate the capacity for life-long learning

6 OOD vs GE courses More than 200 on record Diverse nature academic courses (e.g. Risk Management Models) personal growth (e.g. Meaning of Life) General interests (e.g. Health & Fitness – Exercise and Weight Control) Languages Students not given much guidance

7 How do students select OOD courses? Follow choices of peers Workload Assessment pattern Suit timetable to allow for day off Interest Connected to Programme discipline Route to career not related to major discipline

9 Selection of GE courses – some suggestions Incorporate some of the ILOS as major Programme / Department ILOs Match these ILOs with GE courses available Designated staff members to advice students Help students to develop better understanding of their own strength / weakness – career, interests....... First year Orientation
