Social Security What does it do? – Employers and Employees pay a tax that funds their pensions, or retirement incomes Examples: – Social Security Act

Federal Work Programs What do they do? – It helped put people back to work. – They helped build highways, repair bridges, build parks and public buildings, such as schools, libraries, and post offices. Examples: – Works Progress Administration (WPA) – Public Works Administration (PWA)

Environmental Improvement Programs What do they do? – It helped put people back to work. – They worked to build wildlife preserves, plant trees, maintain forest roads and trails, and build lookout towers to prevent forest fires Examples: – Emergency Conservation Bill – Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

Farm Assistance Programs What do they do? – The government offered payments to farmers if they did not grow certain crops. This prevented a surplus of crops. – The TVA worked to clear rivers to allow farmers to ship their products and they built dams to prevent flooding and provide hydroelectric power. – The government worked to provide electricity to rural areas of the country.

Examples: – Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) – Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) – Rural Electrification Administration (REA)

Increased Labor Rights What do they do? – Labor unions were formed to help people protect their jobs once they were employed. – A minimum wage and maximum number of hours a person could work was established. – It became illegal for kids under 16 to work. Examples: – Fair Labor Standards Act
