John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 LCLS Detector Development Plans John Arthur

X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 The Problem LCLS experiments are expensive and pulsed Data comes all at once Want to collect all the data Current x-ray area detectors are not good enough Too slow, too noisy, etc Getting money for detector development is hard

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 How can the LCLS project help? Use project funding for some detector development PIXEL project can also fund detector development

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 The Plan LCLS project has allocated about $3.5M for development of a prototype 2-d x-ray detector PIXEL project intends to fund detector development at a comparable level

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Recent Developments LCLS Detector Advisory Committee formed LCLS and PIXEL agree to coordinate, specify detectors for specific experiments

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Detector Advisory Committee Gareth Derbyshire (Rutherford Appleton), chair Yoshiyuki Amemiya (Univ. Tokyo) Eric Eikenberry (PSI) Erik Heijne (CERN) Lothar Strueder (Univ. Munich) Albert Walenta (Univ. Siegen)

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Detector Development within PIXEL PIXEL anticipates funding a 2-d detector Groups that proposed detector development to the LCLS SAC were invited to submit expanded proposals to the LDAC last winter LDAC met in February to discuss the proposals Based on LDAC report, PIXEL plans to initiate a collaboration with BNL to develop a 2-d detector in the 2005-2008 time frame

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 The LDAC and LCLS LCLS asked LDAC to also consider the proposed 2-d detector collaboration with Cornell Based on their report, LCLS will continue with the Cornell collaboration, and also initiate a collaboration with LBNL to develop a fast x-ray streak camera

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Two technologies Cornell detector Si diode pixel array detector Detector array is bump-bonded to individual electronics for each pixel BNL detector Si diode array with transistor gating Read out row by row to electronics Wire bonding between detector and electronics

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Other detectors in LCLS Several less ambitious projects Streak camera (LBNL) Beam imaging cameras (LLNL) Intensity monitors (LLNL)

John Arthur X-ray detectorsjarthur@slac.stanford.edu April 7, 2005 Summary LCLS and PIXEL will fund parallel efforts to develop high- performance 2-d x-ray detectors, using different technologies LCLS will also fund less ambitious detector development projects Streak camera Beam imaging cameras LDAC will continue to provide guidance
