OLE Review Project – Why? ANGEL has performed well, scaled well, added functionality Integrated audio recording (Wimba) and TurnItIn; next, clickers ALI relationship continues to be mostly satisfactory In four years since adoption, much has changed: Explosion of Web 2.0 apps and mobile devices – new forms of communication, delivery, participation Marked increase in capture and delivery of audio/video materials Market place: merger of leaders WebCT and Blackboard (and bailing from them?), and more robust and supportable open LMS So … Evaluate where we are, where we want to be after 2010 (renewal) Recommend direction to UCIST

OLE Review Project – What? Overview of process: Phase I: investigate and report on short list of candidates Phase II: further investigate short list, if warranted Comprehensive campus consultation along the way Duration: Starts when UCIST approves the charter Phase I due January 2009 (?) Appropriate scope? Enough information given in the statement of work? Too "scary" or too careful in broaching the subject of a possibility of a switch from ANGEL, if warranted? Team members – OK? http://ist/~chappell/projects/lms_review_2008/team_list.html http://ist/~chappell/projects/lms_review_2008/team_list.html

General Update – Upgrade to v7.2 Upgrade to V7.2 Smooth upgrade on Tuesday, April 29th Authentication problem on Wednesday, April 30th (fixed) Top V7.2 issues: Mostly e-mail E-mail marked as spam (tweak made to our spamassassin, leaves UW vulnerable to internal e-mail spam attack). Addressing with ALI. "Scary" error message when e-mail sent from ANGEL to joeuser@uwaterloo.ca and joeuser has not specified a forwarding address. Encouraged Mac users to upgrade to Firefox 2.0 to fix Mac- related e-mail issues.

General update – Security Breaches Two students gained privileged access via vulnerability. Assoc. Deans of Undergrad Math handling cases. AD- U Arts and Eng apprised (activity in some courses). Log activities uncovered unrelated stolen Uwdir and Nexus password. Two culprits changed midterm marks in UW-ACE. AD-U Math handling cases. Reviewing for recommendations regarding process changes (db checking) and "best practise" (maintain another copy of marks outside UW-ACE??).

General update – Ops topics Auditing a course - Policy Undergrads must register and pay for the course, should not be added just on request. Grads may be added to undergrad courses upon professor's approval. V7.3 Beta Impressive new admin tools. Possibly upgrade April 2009, depends on benefits and “appetite". File formats caused problems with printing in Library Info sent to CTE Liaisons regarding creating PDFs (margin issues).

General update – Add-ons Turnitin pilot into second term survey of students, faculty, staff, admin run by Bruce Mitchell (through UW-ACE) Wimba renewal IST paid half, DCE half; price high and usage low (but vital in some DE courses) Over next 9 months DCE will look into other solutions i-Clicker Discussions about clicker registration integration
