EET 110 - Survey of Electronics Chapter 12 - Series Circuits
2
Circuit Quantities n In a series circuit there is a single path for current flow. n Each component in the series has the same current flow as every other – NOTE: The text uses ‘Electron Flow’, this flows in the opposite direction from ‘Conventional Current Flow’
3
n The quantities in a series circuit.
4
n Quantities to calculate or measure – circuit current n the same for all elements in series – voltage n the sum of all sourses = sum of load voltages – resistance n the sum – power n the sum
5
n Solving the series circuit – I T = I 1 = I 2 = I 3... – V T = V 1 + V 2 + V 3... – R T = R 1 + R 2 + R 3... – P T = P 1 + P 2 + P 3 …
6
n From Ohms Law – V = I x R – I = V / R – R = V / I – P = V x I n This applies either to the circuit as a whole or to each individual component.
7
Solving Examples n 12-1 Find all unknown values of V, I, R, and P for the circuit shown.
8
n Example 12-2
9
n Example 12-3
10
Polarity n To determine the polarity of VOLTAGE – The relative + or - of voltage – cooresponds to meter leads n Electrons flow into the NEGATIVE side of a resistor, and leave from the POSITIVE side.
11
Series Aiding/Series Opposing n Voltage sources may be connected in series with other voltage sources n depending on the orientation of the source, one source may OPPOSE or AID the other source.
