Optical Data Networking: “IP over X” Antonio Rodríguez Moral* & Paul Bonenfant Lucent Technologies – Broadband Networks Group *arodmor@lucent.com Globecom’99 5 – 9 December 1999 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 2 “IP over WDM” Demystified Implementation Reality SDH-Based WDM Terminal SDH-Based WDM Terminal IP over SDH STM-16c IP over SDH STM-16c Multiple SDH STM-16 Wavelengths “Optical Internetworking”? —Really is SDH Internetworking —Implies single evolution for data transport —“Networking”: Service layer networking through SDH/WDM pipes —SDH dependency limits technological innovation (e.g., Packet over Fiber, GbE and 10xGbE over DWDM evolution) —Not taking advantage of networking capability at the Optical layer A STEP AWAY from the original vision of Optical Networking...

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 3 Enter “Digital Wrappers” Optical Channel (Wavelength) Digital Wrapper Wavelength Digital Wrappers are a step toward the original vision of Optical Networking Digital Wrappers enable “virtual transparency” —Releases the Optical Network from SONET/SDH dependency —Allows for end-to-end Optical Transport Networking solutions OCh OAM OCh Payload FEC Data SONET/SDHFDDIATMPDHGbE, 10xGbESDL IP

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 4 What is “IP over WDM”? Take Your Pick... What is “IP over DWDM” (really)? In an increasingly competitive world, Service Providers have to differentiate themselves. Optical Data Networking solutions should be able to accommodate each Service Provider’s unique data networking vision... IP PPP/HDLC SONET/SDH IP ATM SONET/SDH WDM IP ATM WDM IP SONET/SDH WDM IP Standard ATM Mapping POS Mapping ATM Vision Robust Packet over SONET Robust Packet over Fiber IP 1/10xGbE MAC GbE Vision PHY WDM 1/10xGbE PHY SDL PHY SDL WDM

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 5 Does a “Total Solution” Exist ?? A total solution for what problem? And is it really ONE single solution, or a set of solutions? The problem: Optical Data Networks: optical networks that are optimized for data traffic (let’s say IP traffic) and applications Four dimensions pop up already: —what network segment? —what optimization? —what IP traffic? —what user and network applications? And some other dimensions must be considered: —Greenfield vs. Incumbent —IP-only vs. Multi-service platform So, the problem is a multi- dimensional problem, with at least 6 dimensions to consider. A quick, common sense statement: THERE EXISTS NO SINGLE SOLUTION THAT OPTIMIZES THE PROBLEM UNDER ALL POSSIBLE VARIABLES...

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 6...to a Multi-Dimensional Problem! Enterprise Access Metro/Regional Core Network Segment Evolution End Application Hard QoS Soft QoS Best Effort Voice+Video VPN Web browsing Flows Packets Circuits Traffic Mix

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 7 Optical Internetworking vs. Optical Data Networking Optical Internetworking is today’s “IP over WDM”: —“Optical”: Optical layer provides point-to-point transport (DWDM) —“Internetworking”: IP layer provides networking Optical/Data Networking is a more powerful networking solution: —Networking at both the transport (optical) and service (data) layers —Optical networking supports: ä Diversity in data networking protocols and architectures ä Flexibility and robustness via wavelength (Optical Channel) routing, protection, and restoration —Essential for open, giga/tera-bit, carrier-class Optical Data Networks optimized for network segments/applications ä Allows tailored solutions specific to each network segment, and to each Service Provider

Antonio Rodríguez Moral & Paul Bonenfant Globecom’99 Page 8 Views of the “Total Solution(s)” Optical Data Networking Gaining Multi-Vendor Compliance —Standards, Standards, Standards... Survivability Schemes —Service Layer / Transport Layer will both apply, and continue to co-exist Integrating Legacy and Optical Networks —Revolutionary technologies (DWDM, OAs, Digital Wrappers) have enabled an evolution in networking (Optical Networking) Optical Network Deployment (let’s be honest...) —Optical Networking solutions will be deployed where economical to the Service Provider —Optical Networking solutions must meet price targets of existing/alternative technologies, or offer solutions to problems for which there is no alternative Management Systems to Guarantee QoS —“Single-seat” distributed operations platforms, or bust The Future is about a Network of Networks – Some Common Sense (worth repeating): —THERE EXISTS NO SINGLE SOLUTION...
