Some expressions in this group require a noun or a verb+ing. Note the examples: Despite heavy weather, all the players decided to continue the match. In spite of having no time, l decided to help them out.

Other expressions following the pattern are: Besides being quite friendly, my dog likes to bite at times. Due to / because of / on account of our being surprised, the teacher repeated the definition. Apart from applying for some jobs, he did nothing else.

There are many other expression which require a clause. Note the examples: Although it was hard to accept, all of us agreed to pay more. We were all against it. However, he decided to begin the project.
