GeoResources – Local Images Image 1 represents the part of town where I live - 1960's semi-detached houses with reasonable sized gardens and space to park at least one of your cars. Most have been modified with larger porches and double-glazed windows.

Image 2 represents what is happening in the town centre (the CBD) - a large part of it is being knocked down to build a new shopping centre, some offices and some flats by the river Medway which flows through the middle of the town. The photo shows the remains of a sweetie factory - very sad!

Image 3 shows part of the original town centre where each of the terraced streets had a corner shop. Today, the corner shops have nearly all gone but some continue to battle on in competition with the giant supermarkets on the edge of town.

Image 4 shows a local park opened on the 30th April 1930. Open spaces in urban areas are very important - I use this one to walk my dog and it also contains tennis courts, an all-weather hockey/football pitch and space for people to sunbathe in summer.

Image 5 is outside the town and shows a local farm. It is distinctive because this farm grows hops - used in beer making. Kent has a long tradition of growing hops but there are not many hop farms left now - the labour costs are too high. The brewers import their hops from eastern Europe where wages are lower.

Image 6 shows a huge scar on the landscape - it is the route of the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The new high speed trains which run at nearly 200mph travel from Paris to London via the Channel Tunnel. In September 2003 the first trains were being tested on the completed track. The photo also shows the M2 motorway being widened to take the extra traffic heading for the channel ports at Dover and Folkstone.
