MICE Spectrometer Solenoid Design and Fabrication Update Mike Green and Steve Virostek Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICE Video Conference December 7, 2005

Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 2 Design and Procurement Status  The superconductor material is out for bid.  A conceptual design of solenoid module is complete.  A draft of solenoid build-to-spec is document done.  Tracker/patch panel interface discussions are ongoing.  The drawings/illustrations for spec are under development.  Most of the structural FEA work is completed at Oxford.  Wing Lau is in Berkeley next week to work with Mike Green and Steve Virostek towards completing specification.

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 3 Superconductor Material  Procurement spec was written by Mike Green  Quantity is sufficient to fabricate 2 complete solenoids  Bidding process is being handled by LBNL Purchasing.  Bids are due back by December 9, 2005.  The conductor purchase will be completed by IIT after bids are in and evaluated.  Delivery expected 17 weeks after receipt of order

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 9 Field Uniformity in Tracker Volume The region from Z = 4.7 m, Z = 5.7 m is uniform to better than ±0.3 percent from R = 0 to R = 0.15 m.

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 10 B Z Field at the Magnet Coolers The maximum B z at the cooler is 0.09 T..

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 11 B R Field at the Magnet Coolers The maximum B R at the cooler is 0.08 T..

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 12 Field at the VLPC Coolers VLPC At the VLPC the field is Less than 0.05 T.

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 13 Cooler around the Tracker  The coolers for the tracker magnet will see a magnetic field greater than 0.1 T. The specification calls for the use of a Cryomech PT-415 pulse tube cooler.  The VLPC cooler can be located in a region with a field of less than 0.05 T. The VLPC can be cooled by either the Sumitomo RDK-415D GM cooler or the Cryomech PT-415 pulse tube cooler.

December 7, 2005 Mike Green & Steve Virostek - LBNL Page 14 Concluding Comments  The superconductor material contract will be let very soon.  A conceptual design of solenoid module is complete.  A draft of solenoid build-to-spec is document done.  The drawings/illustrations for spec are under development.  Most of the structural FEA work is completed at Oxford.  The field in the bore is very uniform ±0.3 percent.  3 pulse tube coolers will be used for the tracker magnets.  Sumitomo Coolers can be used for the VLPC boxes.
