ADSORPTION OF MICROPOLLUTANTS BY ZEOLITES

GOAL The aim of this project is to see which molecular properties have an influence on the adsorption of micropollutants on zeolite. Hydrophobicity, polarisability, pi-pi bond, size.

SUMMARY What is a zeolite ? Why zeolite should they be useful for micropollutants removal Others authors findings in the use of zeolite as adsorbent. Experiments

WHAT IS A ZEOLITE ? AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra are corner sharing.

WHAT IS A ZEOLITE ? The presence of aluminium results a negative charge of the zeolite's framework. The negative charge is balanced by cations which can move very easily, even replaced...

WHAT IS A ZEOLITE ? This connection between SiO4 and AlO4, give to the zeolite a framework, with pore and internal cavity. The Si/Al ratio has an important effect on the behaviour of the zeolite. ZSM-5

Why zeolite should they be useful ? The most important consideration is the molecular sieving. Avoiding adsorption competition. Strong electric field because of presence of aluminium. Polarizing power increase with Al.

Why zeolite should they be useful ? Adsorption to the right easier than to the left

Others authors findings The log k o/w of MTBE is 0,94 The Y aeolite is the most hydrophilic zeolite. It has the worst efficiency. Adsorption competition between water and MTBE. Smallest is the pore and better is the adsorption. 1mg/L

Experiments Zeolite we use for experiments are : – ZSM-5, pore size : 5,3-5,6 Angstrom, Si/Al= 80 – Y silicalite, pore size : 7,4 angstrom, Si/Al= 80 PAC (GAC 830 P) as reference

Experiments Batch experiments Contact time of 24h to rach the equilibrium time. Samples are filtred with an acetate cellulose filter of 0,45 um.
