What is news? Reporting and Writing Journalism and Media Studies Centre The University of Hong Kong Alex Lo

What is news? News is new or fresh information that concerns matters of public interest: 1.By public interest, we usually mean the disclosure of information that furthers the general welfare of a community or society. 2.But if a news story, without being completely in bad taste, appeals to the salacious interest of the public, it’s good enough for me to run.

What is news? All the President’s Men Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi

What is news? Many journalists would say that an important or “ good ” story is simply one that people want to read or watch … or feel that they have to.

What is news? Timeliness. News is fresh and recent. Importance. News has impact and consequence. Proximity. News is relevant to us. Conflict. News is dramatic.

What is news? Prominence. News is people whose names we recognize. Unusualness. News is abnormal. Human Interest. News is life, and all of the emotions – joy, love, despair – that life ’ s events can cause we humans.

What is news? “ Good ” stories are often about terrible disasters and tragedies. But they can be about many things. They are good because they are important; they have value to readers and viewers.

What is news? The story that played out in Hong Kong and Manila the last 10 days had all the elements that journalists think of when they consider, “ What makes news? ” and “ What makes a good story? ” --Timeliness --Conflict --Importance --Prominence --Proximity --Unusualness And human Interest

What is news? If the news story is about one or more of these things, it’s probably a good story: sex, violence, crime, rich people, famous people, something or someone who causes outrage.

What is news? Good stories are neither good nor bad in an ethical sense. They are good because they generate interest and have meaning to readers… and journalists.
