“Broken” Families According to Moynihan: 26% of black marriages dissolved ~10% of white marriages dissolved Today: 19.3% of blacks have dissolved marriages 10.6% of whites are have dissolved marriages This doesn’t count those who divorced and remarried

Illegitimate Births According to Moynihan: 24% of black children are born out of wedlock 3% of white children are born out of wedlock Today: Harder to get data on illegitimacy 22% of white children live in families that do not include 2 parents 60.4% of black children do

Welfare Dependency According to Moynihan: 56% of non-white children receive AFDC assistance at some time 8% of white children do Today: 32% of TANF recipients are white; 38% are black In 2003, 5.6% of blacks and 0.7% of whites were receiving TANF assistance

Unemployment According to Moynihan: 29.2% of black men experienced unemployment in 1963 Today: 16.3% of black men experienced unemployment during 2005 Being “unemployed” requires looking for work

Child-Bearing According to Moynihan: The ratio of white to non-white fertility is 1:1.42 Today: The ratio of white to BLACK fertility is 1:1.25 The ratio of white to HISPANIC fertility is 1:1.33

Education According to Moynihan: Black women go to school 1.1 years more than black men Today: 11% more black women graduate high school than black men 42% more black women earn a college or graduate degree than black men

Crime According to Moynihan: 3 out of 5 arrests in urban areas were of blacks, and 37-57% of prison inmates were black Moynihan supposes some, but little, bias Today: 40% of prison inmates are black (32% of all black males will enter prison in their lifetime)

The Armed FOrces According to Moynihan: Blacks are 11.8% of the population but only 8% of military personnel Today: Blacks are 13% of the population and 22% of military personnel (34% of military women)
