Research and Education in Structural Dynamics and Control The City College of New York Mr. Zhihua Yi (Presenter) Anil Agrawal (MCEER PI)

Research and Education Goals Education of undergraduate students in structural dynamics and control through independent study and small scale experiments on Quansar shaking table Integrated research and education of undergraduate and graduate students through 10,000 lb shaking table and 5-story building model Advanced theoretical and experimental research in structural control

Education Undergraduate students offered independent study course in structural dynamics, including experimental knowledge using Quansar shaking table facility Seven undergraduate students took independent study course with Prof. Agrawal Experimental structural dynamics introduced in undergraduate course during Spring 2003.

Undergraduate Students Using Quansar Shaking Table Quansar Shaking Table at CCNY

Undergraduate Students Using Quansar Shaking Table Graduate Student Teaching Structural Dynamics Through Shake Table

Undergraduate Students Using Quansar Shaking Table Undergraduate Student Performing Free Vibration

Integrated Research and Education A 10,000 lb unidirectional shaking table installed at the CCNY. Force: 10,000 lb, Stroke: ± 6”, Vel.: 90 in/sec, Frequency: 0.4- 100 Hz A 5-storey building model of 5000 lb weight being constructed. Undergraduate students will participate in theoretical and experimental research from Summer 2003 Currently, 3 undergraduate students participate in research. One undergraduate student visiting Japan during Summer 2003 to participate in REU Program in Japan.

Integrated Research and Education

Advanced Theoretical and Experimental Research in Structural Control Smart Base Isolation Systems A new design approach for smart base isolation system using a ground motion filter recently developed at the CCNY. With this design, drift as well as absolute acceleration of the base-isolated buildings can be reduced simultaneously using semi-active or active controllers. Performance of active and semi-active controllers is similar.
