GUIDING COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN CREATIVITY RESEARCH DAVID C BROWN Computer Science Department WPI, Worcester, MA 01609, USA

Motivation Need to study design creativity Take computer science viewpoint Build Computational Design Creativity systems (CDCs) Experiment with CDCs Study impact of changing the knowledge & reasoning in CDCs

Creative Products How to judge impact? Judge design/product (i.e., CDCs output) How to determine if product is creative? What factors are there for rating?

Besemer’s CPAM: Creative Product Analysis Model Factors: Novelty, Resolution & Style Novelty: newness –Surprising, Original Resolution: meets needs –Logical, Useful, Valuable, Understandable Style: refined, developed, coherent whole –Organic, Well-Crafted, Elegant

CPAM Use Provides a profile –a value for each of the 9 characteristics 1.Human uses profile to judge CDCs design 2.CDCs uses profile to judge partial or complete designs 3.CDCs makes decisions intended to affect the profile

Sample Challenges Surprising: CDCs know what is “normal” Useful: product matches intended use? Valuable: cost-benefit analysis of uses Understandable: difficulty of interaction Organic: aesthetic judgments Elegant: simple but powerful

Consequences Many creativity issues discussed are concerned with ‘novelty’ CPAM encourages a move away from just novelty
