3 DEFINITION  Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. (International Coaching Federation)

4 DEFINITION  WORD ORIGINS “Coach” originally referred to a type of “carriage” It was something that took you from one place to another

5 DEFINITION  First appears in 16 th century  From the French coche  Which was corruption of Hungarian koczi szeker -- a wagon from the town of Kocs.

6 DEFINITION  By the 19 th century, English universities called a private tutor who prepared candidates for examination a “coach.”  Also in 19 th century, English universities were calling someone who trained others for athletic contests a “coach.”

7 DEFINITION  In general, helping someone else expand and apply his or her skills, knowledge, and abilities.  A coach helps someone get from where they are now to where they want to be.

8 GOOD COACHING  Transfers knowledge on a “just-in-time” basis.  Disperses expertise throughout an organization.  Increases individual motivation and morale.  Helps individuals and organizations achieve outstanding results.  Have you ever had a good coach? What was it like?

9 BAD COACHING  Wastes the time of valuable resources.  Creates a hostile work environment.  Creates sub-optimal organizations and ineffective individuals.  Have you ever had a bad coach? What was it like?

10 COACH AS GUIDE  Defining “success”  Creating a vision of the future  Setting goals  Action planning  Evaluating progress

11 COACH AS TEACHER  Transferring knowledge or skills to the person you are coaching.  Equip the person to learn from their own experience in the future.

12 COACH AS MOTIVATOR  Helping the person you are coaching find meaning in his or her role/task/assignment.  Building confidence.  Identifying reinforcing consequences.  Encourage and support

13 EXERCISE  You have just taken on the role of person fitness coach. Your client is trying to lose weight. In the past they have already been told “eat less and exercise more.” It has not worked.  Brainstorm other things you might do as their coach.
