UGANDA SPORTS FESTIVAL Thursday 1 July 2010
2
What it’s all about!! It’s a cultural and activity day centred around (hopefully) the visit of students from our link school – Soroti Secondary School – in Uganda. There will be around 200 Y5 pupils from our feeder schools They will do a mixture of activities throughout the day and YOU will be running most of it!!
3
How will it work? We are using 10 pitches – 5 A pitches and 5 B pitches. Each set of A and B pitches will be linked to an African country – most of which are involved in the world cup. Ghana, Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and, of course, Uganda There will be 2 identical carousels of five activities each lasting approximately 30 minutes Each activity will start with a quiz based on facts which will be produced by the Uganda working group.
4
Language Leader involvement You need to be in 10 groups of 3 people – you do not need to be with people from your normal Active Languages teams These will then be split into 5 A groups and 5 B groups For planning your activities, 1A will work with 1B and so on – so you are planning an identical activity. You will be working separately on the day. Activities should be inclusive, i.e. Activities that all can take part in such as pétanque, obstacle courses, playground games. Activities should also contain a language element such as numbers, colours, foods or animals, collecting information on famous French people etc. Therefore, your plans will need to contain some idea of how you are going to get your groups to learn and use these words.
5
What do I need to do? Sort your groups and get together with your opposite group (I will say which is which) Devise your planned activity – a written plan is absolutely necessary so everyone knows what they are doing (especially if someone is absent and we need stand ins) List any equipment you need Decide on your key vocabulary and make posters – remember the same words must be used on both pitches.
6
What happens next? We should have enough time in lessons to prepare, but it is expected that on Wednesday 30 June, you will be off timetable for at least part of the day to complete and maybe try out your ideas. You should ensure you catch up on any work you miss. You will be off timetable Thursday 1 July for the festival itself. You should be in Language Leaders kit on the Thursday. If you have lost your t-shirt – wear normal PE kit.
