3
3 Exercise 3 Average score = 17 How to deal with in-process applications Potential rating errors – Halo, horns, some gender bias – Data provide us with a clue, but can ’ t make definitive statements Relationship between skills and performance – Systematic issues?
4
4 In-class writing Imagine your co-workers are trying to organize a union. What would you do? Would you support it? Why or why not?
5
5 Collective Bargaining Union negotiates on behalf of members Contracts typically include provisions on – Pay – Benefits – Work rules – Grievance resolutions More difficult to reach agreement on first contract – Can also be difficult in times of changing economic conditions
6
6 Bargaining Process Must bargain “ in good faith ” Can have an impasse – Deadlock in negotiations – Then move on to conflict resolution (method depends on the contract) – For example, in MLB, owners can implement contract changes if an impasse has been declared
7
7 Conflict Resolution Mediation Arbitration May have work stoppages if contract is not resolved – Slowdowns, strikes are employee driven – Lockouts are employer driven – Regulations about replacement workers
8
8 Grievances Charge that contract has been violated – Discipline – Discharge Typical process is escalating – Contact union steward – Discuss problem with supervisor – Discuss problem with HR – Involve management and union executives – Arbitration hearing
9
9 A different kind of union- management relationship Saturn ’ s collaborative relationship – Increased quality – Productivity – Employee and customer satisfaction – Returned to standard contract in 1999 Similar strategy used at NUMMI (joint venture between GM and Toyota)
10
10 AFL-CIO website What themes are portrayed? What are their current hot topics? Who are the intended users of the site? Working America – “ Voice for nonunion workers ” (www.aflcio.org) – Community based organization, not employment based – Addresses issues such as jobs, health care, education
11
11 Conclusion Unions have good points and bad points – Protection of workers, job security, health and retirement benefits – “ Old school ” approaches can cause challenges for organizations Fact that many people still desire unionization of some form reinforces idea that management does not always treat employees fairly
12
