MICO 8 th February 2010 Terry Hart (MOM) - Decay Solenoid and Target - MICE Machine Physics runs - Problems and Issues
2
MICO 8 th February 2010 08 Feb, 20102 Decay Solenoid (from Matt Hills) Decay Solenoid and refrigerator pipework evacuated and pumped Plan: Conduct more thorough leak investigation - Connect He leak detector to pipework, spray with helium externally - Maybe after couple days pumping, He bkgnd. low enough to detect gross leaks - If that doesn’t work, fill insulating vacuum spaces with He to check for leaks - If these don’t detect leaks, may have to refill system, start further cleaning Timescales - Above tasks to take most of week - Cooldown can’t be started until problem found Target (from Paul Hodgson, more in Ken Long’s talk) Target 2 commenced operation in R78 Jan. 25. Target 2 stopped pulsing late Feb. 7. UPS suspected to have been interrupted by IGBT failure. Achieved 1,018,892 actuations. - Record for target run in R78!

Last Week’s MICE Machine Physics Plan 08 Feb, 20103 Machine Physics Fri 5 th February16:00 – 00:00 Primarily to establish that DAQ and detectors work Sun 7 th February 08:30 – 00:00 Commission luminosity monitors Mon 8 th February16:00 – 00:00 Nothing yet planned. Left for contingency Wed 10 th February08:30 – 00:00 - 16h activation study at 2V beamloss. - May also provide opportunity to obtain some TOF calibration data because DAQ has been rewired

Machine Physics MICE Runs Feb. 5 - exercise detectors and DAQ – Target stoppage during verification run – Target restart failed after 2 nd stoppage – No data taken – Worst feared for target mechanism 08 Feb, 20104

5 Machine Physics MICE Runs Feb. 7 – commission luminosity monitors (LM) in ISIS vault – LM are 4 scintillators read out by PMTs – Replacement of broken PMT successful – 24 V line of NIM crate failed; new NIM crate installed – Installation difficult – Old crate hardwired to distribution box – Cable rerouting necessary to reach top of crate – Checked and set LM discriminator levels to 500 mV – Set LM data integration gate to 5 ms – Scan over beam losses – 20, 50, 100, 200, 300, 500, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 mV – Almost 2000 pulses total – Checked 3.32 ms integration gate (same as DAQ), negligible data difference Paul Soler: “Everything’s hunky-dory.”
6
TOF/KL Calibration Q4, Q8 running fine; use these as long as possible After consulting with MICE TOF experts – Feb. 8: Take 300 MeV/c π - at 1V beam loss 1 V is maximum allowed ISIS attending to dipole ring; staying tuned about MICE shift – Feb. 10: Take 300 MeV/c π + at 2V beam loss 2V for activation study Martin Hughes willing to switch D1, D2, Q1-9 polarities If quadrupole flow meters fixed, we’ll use all quadrupoles 08 Feb, 20106

User Run Plans To be determined, depends on – Decay Solenoid (DS) – Quadrupoles Plan – Get best estimate of decay solenoid schedule – Poll MICE about desired data w/ or w/o DS – Ask ISIS for data runs with at least one week notice 08 Feb, 20107

Issues With MICE Data Taking and Analysis External access to MLCR computers impossible – For collaboration with experts from all over the world, the way the restrictions are implemented is problematic – Henry Nebrensky’s talk outlines solution and plan Quadrupole PS flow meters giving false alarms – Known problem – Repeated Q4 and Q8 trips yesterday interrupted data taking – Q7 and Q9 powered down to remove last quadrupole triplet Prevent asymmetric focusing if only Q7, Q9 on – Checked water flow in controlled access; water flow fine – Willie cleaned out Q4, Q8 meters; Q4, Q8 ramped up now to check for trips – Possible software solution 08 Feb, 20108
