2 Match fixing and sporting fraud 2011 Communication on Sport: match fixing recognised as threat to the integrity and ethics of sport 2011 Communication on fighting corruption in the EU: corruption in sport singled out as possible area of action Match fixing as form of corruption Need to have an overview of how Member States deal with match fixing episodes Study on legal framework applicable to sporting fraud at national level in the EU - launched in September 2011 Results expected beginning of 2012 Basis to assess whether EU action is needed

3 Match fixing and gambling Green Paper on online gambling launched by the Commission in March 2011 Public consultation open until July 2011 Integrity of sport part of the topics of the consultation Workshop organised by DG MARKT in May 2011 Results of the consultation currently analysed with a view to follow-up

4 Other actors: IOC, CoE Working Group on illicit and irregular gambling in sport launched by IOC in March 2011 Second meeting held in June 2011 to work on three main topics: education/information, detection and legislation Experts groups set up in second half of 2011 Results to be reported to Working Group beginning of 2012 Commission’s services associated to IOC work Council of Europe: Recommendation on promotion of the integrity of sport against manipulation of results, notably match fixing – adopted on 28 September 2011

5 EU Council Match fixing as priority for the Polish Presidency Expert Group on Good Governance to produce recommendations for future consideration on the fight against match fixing by mid-2012

6 Education And Prevention Importance of education and awareness raising among key actors (players, referees, match officials) Different initiatives already exist (e.g. EU Athletes & EGBA) EU added value in promoting networking, exchanges and sharing of good practices Possibility of funding for such measures in 2012 budget (Pilot Projects voted by EP) Fight against match fixing to be part of priorities of EU Sport Sub-Programme post-2014
